Four Freedoms

A short poem

by Robin Walter

'Four Freedoms' is a four-line poem written for Karen Wimhurst's choral work 'Freedoms', first performed by Palida choir in March 2023:

words pour from our open lips

   shaping each our sacred dance

take our place at the long table

growing peace lilies in the park

These are based on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s ‘Four Freedoms’

   Freedom of speech

   Freedom of worship

   Freedom from want

   Freedom from fear

The work was in response to the speech made by American Abolitionist and liberal activist Wendell Phillips in 1852:  “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty; power is ever stealing from the many to the few."

Here is a short clip of the end of the choral piece by Karen Wimhurst.
