6 . . . Countdown to publication . . .

In chapter 2 we look at Trees in our lives and consider the many contributions of trees.

We come across trees in our lives every day and mostly take them for granted. Trees are often just part of the backdrop to our daily routines – street trees on our walk to the shops, hedgerow trees flashing by on the commute to work, a clump of trees seen from an office window, eating a sandwich under a tree at lunchtime. Despite the low level of tree cover in Britain, trees populate our private gardens, our shared spaces and our towns and countryside. They frame our open areas and shape the ‘spirit of the place’. Look around you and ask yourself what this place would be without trees? What would be lost? Then ask, what would it be like with more trees?
